Howdy, Hutto. Looks like rain is headed our way later this week, so keep an eye on the forecast if you’re going to Friday’s football game or making weekend plans.

I also broke down the proposals City Council will hear Thursday. They could shape what gets built around Hutto, and I wanted you to know what’s being asked before the meeting. I’ll fill you in on what happens next week.

What’s on the Table at City Hall This Week

Before a store opens or a building goes up, the city has to decide what’s allowed on the land. On Thursday, October 1, Hutto City Council will consider proposals that could shape where we shop, work, and travel around town.

Could we get a new grocery store? A developer wants to change the rules for an approximately five-acre retail site at West Live Oak Street and Ed Schmidt Boulevard. City staff says the changes are intended to make a grocery store possible.

We had some fun last week wondering whether Project Orchard could be an Aldi or a Trader Joe’s. This filing names no grocery chain, and nothing in the city’s materials confirms it’s connected to Project Orchard. But it does reveal another detail: if a grocery tenant isn’t secured, the proposed rules would protect a grove of trees on the property. Building a grocery store could mean removing it.

What’s changing along Ed Schmidt Blvd? Council has several related decisions to make about the Hutto Tech and Trade Center. The developer wants to bring 18.7 acres into city limits and change the land’s planned use from neighborhood growth to light industrial development. Together with an adjoining parcel, it could become an approximately 70-acre area for offices, warehouses, and logistics businesses.

The proposal also shifts a planned road between Ed Schmidt Blvd and the SH 130 frontage road about 1,200 feet south. For those of you nearby, that could eventually mean a new road connection and more places to work. How much delivery traffic the development might bring—and when any of it would be built—remains unclear.

And the data center? A roughly 140-acre site near US 79 and FM 3349 is already zoned for light industrial use. Council will consider rules that would specifically allow data centers and on-site power generation there. The land belongs to the Hutto Economic Development Corporation, but the plans don’t yet give us firm answers about a future project’s water use, power needs, or noise.

Texas has directed state agencies to pause permits sought by data centers while audits proceed. Thursday’s vote would address what Hutto allows on the property; it would leave those larger questions and permitting steps ahead.

Coming up October 13: The Planning and Zoning Commission is scheduled to hear a hotel-related amendment for an existing development area on Ed Schmidt Boulevard and review a preliminary layout for 141 residential lots along CR 133. We’ll keep following both as the plans become clearer.

These meetings set the rules for what could happen next in Hutto. If you want to follow the October 1 discussion or speak at a public hearing, City Council meets at 7 PM at Hutto City Hall, 500 W. Live Oak Street.

Sports news and updates from Hippo Nation.

Big win: The Hippos opened district play with a 61–7 win at East View on Friday, Sept. 25, their fourth straight victory. Sophomore quarterback Micah Antoun completed 16 of 17 passes for 396 yards and four touchdowns. Hutto is now 4–1 and has scored at least 50 points in every game this season.

Next up: Hutto hosts Vista Ridge on Friday, Oct. 2, at 7 PM at Hutto Memorial Stadium. The Rangers are 2–3 and coming off a 51–28 loss to Rouse. It’s also Middle School Night and Pink Out, so expect plenty of Hippo Nation spirit in the stands. Keep an eye on the weather radar, as we’re expecting a good deal of rain towards the end of the week.

Elsewhere in varsity sports: Volleyball has two home matches in the HHS Big Gym this week: Rouse on Tuesday, Sept. 29, and Vista Ridge on Friday, Oct. 2. Both are listed for 6:30 PM. Friday’s match starts just ahead of football kickoff.
