Howdy, Hutto. Today is Election Day, and I think my phone and mailbox have earned a break. Between the political texts, ads, and candidate flyers, I’ve gotten enough campaign messages to last a while. Here’s hoping things quiet down after today.
But before we celebrate that, if you haven’t voted yet, make time to cast your ballot today.
This week, I also dug into Hutto’s alcohol rules and the new petition aimed at changing them. If you’ve been hearing rumblings about why some restaurants can serve cocktails while others can’t, I’ve got the backstory and what could happen next down below.
And a shout-out to Merge Barbershop, which is celebrating its new location this Saturday. If you’re due for a haircut, give the new shop a look and show a local business some love.
All that and more below. Thanks, as always, for hanging out with me every Tuesday. Have a great week, and I’ll see you around town.

Why Hutto Is Revisiting Its Alcohol Rules
A 2006 vote still shapes where Hutto restaurants can serve cocktails. A new petition aims to bring those rules up to date.

A restaurant can be inside Hutto and still face different cocktail rules than another restaurant across town.
That’s the issue behind a petition drive launched October 27 by the city, the Hutto Economic Development Corporation, and the Hutto Area Chamber of Commerce. Organizers are aiming for a possible May 2027 election to bring the city’s alcohol-sales permissions under the same rules.
How we got here
The boundary problem traces back to Hutto’s 2006 alcohol election, when the city was smaller.
Under Texas law, adding land to a city generally preserves that land’s existing alcohol status. Annexation doesn’t automatically extend the permissions approved in an earlier city election.
Texas also treats different kinds of alcohol sales separately. An area can allow beer and wine while restricting ordinary sales of liquor-based cocktails.
Put those rules together, and Hutto can grow without every newly annexed property gaining the same alcohol permissions.

Why restaurant owners care
During the August 20 City Council meeting, Mayor Mike Snyder cited Buffalo Wild Wings and LongHorn Steakhouse as restaurant projects affected by the issue.
For a business planning to serve cocktails, that can complicate an otherwise attractive location. Organizers argue that consistent rules would help recruit restaurants and keep more dining spending in Hutto.
That is the case supporters are making. Changing alcohol permissions would remove one potential obstacle; individual companies would still decide whether and where to open.
What the petition actually asks
The petition requests an election on “The legal sale of all alcoholic beverages including mixed beverages.”
That wording is broader than a restaurant-only cocktail proposal. Businesses would still need the appropriate state permits and would remain subject to applicable zoning.
There’s another wrinkle: TABC offers private-club permits that can allow alcohol service to members even in dry areas. That’s why a simple “wet” or “dry” label doesn’t explain every business’s situation.
City Hall’s role
The citywide boundary problem can’t be resolved simply by approving a zoning change.
Council discussions about alcohol boundaries date back to 2023. This September, council also sought legislation to make calling a local alcohol election easier.
Those records show a longstanding state-law complication and local efforts to address it. They don’t establish why the problem has persisted this long or justify assigning fault to one person.
What happens next
Organizers say they need about 2,900 verified signatures from qualified Hutto city voters. If the petition qualifies and an election is ordered, voters could decide the question in May 2027.
Signing requests an election; it doesn’t change the law or cast a ballot. The form also states that signers want the described sales legalized, so residents should read it before deciding whether to sign.
Where to sign
You can sign the alcohol petition in person at these locations:
Hutto Area Chamber of Commerce: 122 East St.
Julio’s Mexican Restaurant: 560 U.S. 79
Casa Jalisco Sports Bar & Grill: 125 Co-Op Blvd.
Friday Night Liquors: 409 W. Front St.
Starbeam Liquor No. 1: 133 E. Front St.
Starbeam Liquor No. 2: 6081 FM 1660
You must have been registered to vote within Hutto’s city limits when the petition was issued. For eligibility questions, current signing hours, and petition availability, contact the Hutto Chamber at 512-759-4400.

Hutto Hippos Athletics
Sports news and updates from Hippo Nation.

The bye week is over, and the Hippos have one regular-season game left. Hutto (7–2 overall, 4–1 district) hosts Vandegrift (6–3, 4–1) on Friday, November 6, at 7:00 PM at Hutto Memorial Stadium.
Hutto enters the finale averaging 55.7 points per game, with its two losses coming by a combined five points. The Hippos beat Rouse 49–35 before the break, while Vandegrift beat the Raiders 42–28 last Friday.
What Friday decides
Cedar Park has already clinched the district title, finishing 10–0 overall and 6–0 in district. Friday’s winner takes second place in District 24-6A at 5–1, while the loser finishes third at 4–2.
How the playoffs shake out
Hutto has already secured a Class 6A Division I playoff spot. In 6A, the top four teams in each district qualify, and the two larger schools enter Division I. Hutto is the district’s largest school.
Thursday’s East View–Rouse game decides the final playoff spot and helps determine Hutto’s seed:
If Rouse wins: Rouse joins Hutto in Division I, and the Hippos get the district’s No. 1 Division I seed, regardless of Friday’s result.
If East View wins: Vandegrift joins Hutto in Division I, so Friday’s winner gets the district’s No. 1 Division I seed, and the loser gets No. 2.
The playoffs begin November 12–14, with Bridgeland or Cypress Ranch the possible first-round opponents. The date, kickoff, and venue are still to be finalized. Friday’s district finish also matters for playoff site selection under UIL rules.
