Howdy, Hutto. Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, giving families a little more time to enjoy the night without school the next morning. From trick-or-treating with the kids to spooky movies and Halloween cocktails, this week’s events section has plenty of ways to celebrate around town.

And with the Hippos already playoff-bound and heading into a bye, we’re also taking stock of the season and what’s still at stake in District 24-6A. And if voting is still on your to-do list, early voting ends Friday, Oct. 30.

Thanks, as always, for spending part of your Tuesday with me. Hope to see you around town.

Hutto Hippos Athletics

Sports news and updates from Hippo Nation.

The Hippos are headed to the playoffs. Hutto’s 49–35 road win over Rouse on Thursday secured a Class 6A Division I berth and sent the team into the bye week at 7–2 overall and 4–1 in district.

Seven touchdown passes, plus two big takeaways

Sophomore quarterback Micah Antoun completed 27 of 36 passes for 377 yards and seven touchdowns. Jaiden Fields caught 14 passes for 212 yards and three scores, while Dylan Owens added two touchdown catches; Carson Fields and Brayden Childs caught the other two.

Carson also intercepted two passes in the second half, helping Hutto protect its lead. Several of the Hippos’ receivers also play defensive back, contributing on both sides of the ball.

A season worth getting excited about

Hutto has won seven of its last eight games, scored 501 points, and averaged 55.7 points per game while allowing 24.2. The Hippos have scored at least 50 points in seven of nine games, and their two losses came by a combined five: 53–50 against Harker Heights and 37–35 against Cedar Park.

The individual production is just as impressive. Through nine games, the statistics show:

  • Micah Antoun: 2,769 passing yards, 41 touchdown passes, five interceptions, and a 72.1% completion rate.

  • Jaiden Fields: 72 catches, 1,217 receiving yards, and 22 receiving touchdowns.

That is plenty of reason for Hippo Nation to feel good about November. Hutto put up 35 against an unbeaten Cedar Park team, showing this offense can produce against the district leader, too.

District 24-6A standings

Through Oct. 27.

  • Cedar Park: 5–0 district, 9–0 overall

  • Hutto: 4–1 district, 7–2 overall

  • Vandegrift: 3–1 district, 5–3 overall

  • Rouse: 2–2 district, 4–4 overall

  • East View: 1–3 district, 3–5 overall

  • Leander: 0–4 district, 1–7 overall

  • Vista Ridge: 0–4 district, 2–6 overall

Cedar Park visits Vista Ridge this Friday, Oct. 30. A Timberwolves win would secure Cedar Park’s outright district title. Hutto can still finish level with Cedar Park at 5–1, but it needs a Vista Ridge upset and a win over Vandegrift on Nov. 6.

The playoff spot is secure; the bracket is still taking shape

Class 6A sends four teams from each district to the playoffs. With four district wins already, Hutto is guaranteed a place regardless of its finale.

The qualifiers then split by enrollment: the two larger schools enter Division I, and the two smaller schools enter Division II. Hutto has the district’s largest UIL alignment enrollment, putting the Hippos in Division I.

One wrinkle to watch: Rouse’s alignment enrollment is larger than Vandegrift’s. If Rouse qualifies, it joins Hutto in Division I. The Raiders visit Vandegrift this Friday, making that a useful game to follow during Hutto’s break.

Hutto’s exact seed, first-round opponent, and game site remain unsettled. The opening playoff round is Nov. 12–14.

A breather before the next test

There is no varsity game this week after nine consecutive weeks of football. Coach Casey Walraven has described the bye as a chance to recover and work on fundamentals, especially with key players contributing on offense and defense.

Hutto has the offensive production to be a dangerous playoff matchup, and the timely interceptions against Rouse are something to build on. Keeping opponents from matching that scoring pace will matter: Cedar Park scored 37, and Rouse scored 35. The break gives the Hippos time to prepare for November football.

Next game: Vandegrift at Hutto — Friday, Nov. 6, at 7:00 PM at Hutto Memorial Stadium.
